Local SEO for Orthodontists: How to Get Found by Families Searching for Braces and Invisalign

A family in Pasadena types "orthodontist near me" into their phone. A thirty-something in Santa Monica searches "Invisalign cost." Both are about to make a decision worth thousands of dollars, and both will pick from whatever Google shows them first.

Orthodontics is one of the most valuable local searches there is. A single new patient can mean a treatment plan that runs for years and often brings siblings and friends along. That is why it pays to understand exactly how patients find a practice, and where most practices lose them.

Patients search twice, for two different things

The first search is usually broad: "orthodontist near me" or "braces in Burbank." Google answers with the map pack, the three businesses shown at the top with ratings, photos, and a call button. The second search happens once someone has a few names in mind. They look up your reviews, your before and after photos, and your website, often on the same afternoon.

You have to win both moments. The map decides whether you get considered. Your reviews and your site decide whether you get the call.

Choose your primary category with care

Your Google Business Profile category tells Google what you are. For most practices, Orthodontist is the right primary category, and it should stay that way. Then add secondary categories that match what you really offer, such as Cosmetic Dentist if you provide clear aligner care. Do not stuff in categories that do not fit. A narrow, accurate profile outranks a cluttered one.

Build a page for every treatment, not one page for everything

This is where many practices leave the most money behind. A single "Services" page that lists braces, Invisalign, retainers, and early treatment in a paragraph each cannot rank for any of them. Google rewards pages that go deep on one topic.

Give each treatment its own page: traditional braces, clear aligners, early treatment for children, adult orthodontics, and so on. On each one, include the city or neighborhood you serve, explain how the process works, show how long treatment usually takes, and answer the questions families always ask. A parent searching "when should my child see an orthodontist" should land on a page that answers it plainly and invites them to book a consultation.

Reviews decide who gets the call

Parents read reviews closely, because they are trusting you with a child for a year or two. Patients considering clear aligners read them just as carefully. Reviews that mention a treatment and a team member by name, such as "Dr. Patel made my daughter feel comfortable from day one," help both trust and rankings, because Google reads the words inside them.

The best time to ask is at a moment of delight: the day the braces come off, or the visit where a patient first sees their new smile. Send a text with a direct link while they are still in the chair. Then reply to every review, including the critical ones, calmly and without defensiveness. Future patients read your replies as closely as the reviews themselves.

Show real photos of your practice and your results

Families want to know what the experience will feel like before they walk in. Upload photos of your front desk, your treatment rooms, your team, and, with written permission, finished smiles. Profiles with fresh photos give Google and patients a reason to trust that you are active. Stock images do the opposite.

If you have more than one office, treat each one separately

Many orthodontic groups run locations in several neighborhoods. Each office needs its own Google Business Profile, its own page on your website, and its own set of reviews. A single page that lists three addresses will not rank in any of the three cities. A dedicated page for the Encino office that mentions nearby streets, parking, and the doctors who see patients there will.

Make booking effortless

A patient who is ready to schedule a consultation will not hunt for it. Put a clear request button and your phone number at the top of every page, and make sure the booking form works on a phone. Many families search in the evening after the kids are in bed, so an online option that works at 9 p.m. captures people who would otherwise forget by morning.

Keep your information identical everywhere

Your practice name, address, and phone number should read the same on your website, your Google profile, and the directories patients use, including healthcare and insurance listings. Small mismatches, like Suite 200 on one site and Ste. 200 on another, add up. Cleaning them up is not glamorous, but it quietly strengthens everything else you do.

The bottom line

Orthodontic patients make a considered, expensive choice, and most of that choice happens on Google before anyone calls. The practices that win have a complete profile, a page for every treatment, steady reviews, and a site that makes booking easy. Get those four right and you stop competing on price and start being the practice families already trust before they walk in.
